George Frederic Handel's quot;Alexander's Feastquot; has been one of the composer's most popular works since its premiere 1736, and yet, few recordings of the complete work are available. It is neither an opera nor an oratorio, but rather a colorful setting of John Dryden's Ode for the Feast of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, in 1697. Scored for recorders,oboes, three bassoons, trumpets, bass drums, a concertante cello and the up to a seven-voice choir, this is one of Händel's most extravagantly scored works.This recording marks the first appearance on CD of the acclaimed Schleswig-Holstein Festival choir and orchestra.
